Ascension
Project Overview
“Ascension” is a fashion film that explores the concept of defying norms through a contemporary reinterpretation of hanbok, traditional Korean attire. The title symbolizes transcendence—an evolution beyond social structures, where individuals break free from rigid frameworks to discover new versions of themselves. This journey reflects a movement toward self-realization and entry into a redefined world.
Objective
This project challenges the notion of “normality” by revealing untapped potentials beyond conventional boundaries. It poses a critical question: What defines normal? Departing from the status quo is not merely an act of rebellion, but a deliberate process of reimagining societal standards and expanding the field of possibility.

Fashion
Traditional hanbok, known for its strict design codes, embodies the enduring values and norms passed down through generations. In this project, only the essential elements of hanbok are preserved, while its conventional design framework is intentionally dismantled. By deconstructing these principles, the garments challenge traditional aesthetics, appearing unconventional or even chaotic when viewed through the lens of tradition. This visual disruption symbolizes a departure from inherited norms and invites a reinterpretation of cultural identity.

Look 1: Dismantlementism
The first costume retains conceptual elements of hanbok—such as translucent and glossy materials, the garment’s signature silhouette, and jeogori knots at the waist.
These familiar features are layered and reconfigured through unexpected design choices.
The unusual garment structure and nontraditional layering techniques express a sense of dismantlementism, breaking apart established codes to explore the unfamiliar and the experimental.
Look 2 : Relaxationism
The second look continues to evoke the essence of hanbok through material choices, jeogori knot detailing, and the skirt’s waist construction. However, these elements are juxtaposed with exaggerated shoulders and abbreviated skirt lengths. This contrast introduces a sense of relaxationism, softening the rigidity of traditional formality and symbolizing a freer, more fluid reinterpretation of the hanbok silhouette.
Background
Mood
Iridescent pastel-toned spectrum enables a world of new diversity beyond the norm and express the character of Aadi, where purity and strength coexist.
Props
Traditional Korean objects abstracted like re-designed ceramics and najeon chilgi in translucent, glass and chrome materials were used to match the surreal stage atmosphere and redesigned hanbok theme.
